China faces 200pc tariff over rare earth: Trump

US President Donald Trump has warned of a steep tariff on Chinese goods if Beijing restricts exports of rare-earth magnets, amid ongoing trade tensions between the two countries

Trump said Monday night that a 200 per cent tariff would be imposed on China should it limit shipments of rare-earth magnets to the US, reported Investopedia. The statement followed his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at the White House. Trump claimed China had monopolised global magnet production and insisted the US must secure access to the materials.

The warning comes as Washington and Beijing continue a fragile trade truce, extended earlier this month to November. Under the agreement, China has eased restrictions on rare-earth mineral exports while the US has relaxed curbs on semiconductor sales.

Both countries had previously escalated tariffs on each other's goods, reaching record levels earlier this year. Although some duties were lowered in May, overall tariff rates remain high.
