HK government to announce logistics industry ESG roadmap

THE Hong Kong SAR government will soon unveil the ESG roadmap for the local logistics industry in response to the global trend of promoting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, said Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan.

The government official said this roadmap aims to assist small and medium-sized logistics enterprises in systematically implementing ESG practices to meet international standards, enhance the overall competitiveness of the logistics industry, and solidify Hong Kong's leading position as an international logistics hub.

Ms Chan pointed out that the Legislative Council's Finance Committee has approved over HKD200 million (US$25.7 million) in funding to expedite the establishment of the "Port Community System" by the end of the year.

This system will interconnect the city's shipping, port, logistics, and trading sectors through information sharing, Ms Chan said.

The system will also enable real-time tracking of goods by all parties, breaking the current fragmentation of information and creating conditions for seamless integration with other ports, thereby enhancing the international competitiveness of Hong Kong ports, she added.

Ms Chan pointed out that Hong Kong has three advantages in logistics, especially in handling high-value goods, namely talent, technology and geography, which provide strong support for the development of Hong Kong's shipping industry.

She believes that by taking advantage of Hong Kong's advantages to improve quality and quantity, Hong Kong's shipping and logistics industry can make steady progress and discover new growth points.
